Available in much larger sizes than ever before, the televisions and monitors of today that are based on LCD technology are much thinner and lighter than those based on cathode ray tubes (CRTs). This combination of features helps to make LCDs more practical than CRTs in many roles, and, as manufacturing costs continue to fall, their eventual dominance of the television and computer markets is obvious – in 2007, sales of LCD-based televisions surpassed those of CRT-based units worldwide. Many of these LCD-based televisions and displays now include cameras that capture still or video images digitally. This enables gesture control, where a wave of the viewer’s hand can increase the volume or change a channel on a television or move a virtual character in a video game. Many also offer wireless Internet access.
