Board of Directors
Bruce McWilliams has served as Chief Executive Officer, President and a member of our Board of Directors since June 1999. He became Chairman of the Board in February 2002. From November 1997 to January 1999, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of S-Vision Inc., a silicon chip-based display company which he co-founded. From January 1995 to November 1996, Dr. McWilliams served as Senior Vice President at Flextronics International Ltd., an electronic manufacturing services company. From February 1989 to January 1995, he served as President of nCHIP Inc., a multi-chip module packaging company which he co-founded and which was acquired by Flextronics in 1995. McWilliams is a member of the board of directors for Intermolecular, Inc. a molecular engineering electronics company. He also serves on the advisory board for the Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2005, he was awarded Ernst & Young's Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year® award. He holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Carnegie Mellon University.
Robert Boehlke currently serves on the board of directors for MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. Previously he served on the board of directors of LTX, Entegris Inc., QuickLogic Corp., DuPont Photomasks, Inc. and Semi-Sematech. He was the executive vice president and chief financial officer for KLA-Tencor prior to his retirement in 2000. During his 17-year tenure with KLA-Tencor, Boehlke held a variety of management positions including chief operating officer and chief financial officer. During Boehlke's tenure at KLA, revenue grew from $17 million for the full-year 1983 to $1.5 billion for the full-year 2000. Prior to joining KLA-Tencor, Boehlke was an investment banking partner at Kidder, Peabody & Company, Inc. Mr. Boehlke received his master's degree in business administration from Harvard University and earned his bachelor's degree in science from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Nicholas E. Brathwaite, currently a partner with Bigwood Capital, recently retired from the role of chief technology officer at Flextronics, where he was instrumental in transitioning the company from a $200 million contract manufacturer to a $30 billion global industry leader in electronics design and manufacturing services. While at Flextronics, Brathwaite led the development of several products and also envisioned, founded and developed several successful businesses. These include Flextronics’ cell phone ODM, camera module and power supply business units. Brathwaite also founded and managed Flextronics Design Services and Product Introduction Centers. Prior to Flextronics, Brathwaite was the vice president and general manager of operations at nChip. As an nChip co-founder, he was initially responsible for leading the development of nChip’s industry leading advanced multi-chip module assembly processes before taking on the role of vice president of operations. Before joining nChip, Brathwaite spent six years with Intel Corporation in various engineering and management positions in Technology Development and Manufacturing. Brathwaite has several patents and has authored more than 50 national and international publications. He serves on the Board of Directors for Power Integrations and Photon Dynamics. He has a B.Sc. (Honors) degree in Applied Chemistry from McMaster University, Canada and a M.Sc. degree in Polymer Science & Engineering, from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
John B. Goodrich is currently the CEO of a new business computer system management company in Sunnyvale, California. He has served as a member of Tessera's board of directors since August 2001. Mr. Goodrich is a former member of the law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati where he practiced corporate law for 30 years until retiring in January 2002. He presently serves on the board of Trimble Navigation Limited, and on the boards of several private companies. Mr. Goodrich received a B.A. from Stanford University, a J.D. from the University of Southern California and an L.L.M. in taxation from New York University.
Al S. Joseph, Ph.D. has served as a member of our board of directors since August 2001. Dr. Joseph founded Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation, Enhanced Energy Systems, Unitive Electronics, Inc., and Quad Design Ltd. In addition, he is a director of Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation. He has worked in the semiconductor industry for more than 40 years, 15 of which he spent focused specifically in the semiconductor packaging industry. Dr. Joseph published 32 papers, was a fellow of the American Institute of Physics, was also a winner of the Chairman Award and National CIT Award and has served on several government committees. Dr. Joseph holds a Ph.D. in physics from Case Western University.
David C. Nagel was most recently president and chief executive officer of PalmSource, Inc., a leading provider of operating system software platforms for smart mobile devices. Prior to PalmSource, Nagel was the chief technology officer at AT&T and president of AT&T Labs. Before joining AT&T, Nagel was senior vice president at Apple Computer, where he headed the advanced technology group and then led the worldwide research and development group, responsible for all Macintosh hardware and software products. Prior to Apple, Nagel had a long career at NASA’s Ames Research Center where he was head of human factors research. Nagel has served on a number of national and international advisory committees, including the first President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC), on which he served five years for President William Clinton. Nagel is a member of the board of directors of Arcsoft, Inc., Epocrates, Leapfrog Technologies (LF) and Tessera, Inc. (TSRA) and serves on the Boards of Trustees of the UCLA Foundation, the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley and the SETI Institute. Nagel is a member of the Advisory Board for 3i, Inc., a private equity firm located in the U.K. He was also recently named to the Advisory Board of Arcapita, Inc., a private equity company headquartered in Bahrain and Atlanta. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering and a Ph.D. in perception and mathematical psychology, all from UCLA.
Henry Nothhaft currently serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Danger, Inc., a privately-held wireless software and services provider, where he has directed the company from its initial product launch (in 2002) to its present position as a market leader in the mobile internet market. Previously, Nothhaft served as chairman, president and chief executive officer of Concentric Network Corporation. From 1995 to 2001, Nothhaft was instrumental in guiding the company through its successful IPO and its merger with NextLink in 1999, which created XO Communications. Prior to Concentric, Nothhaft held executive roles at DSC Communications Corporation, including senior vice president of marketing, and group president, in addition to serving as a member of its Board of Directors. Nothhaft has also served as vice president of marketing and vice president of sales for GTE Telenet Communications Corporation (now Sprint). Mr. Nothhaft has an M.B.A. from George Washington University and a B.S. degree with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy, and he is a former officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Robert A. Young, Ph.D. has served as a member of our board of directors since 1991 and served as Chairman of the Board from 1996 to 2002. Since February 2001, Dr. Young has served as Chief Executive Officer for Indian Rock Technology, Inc., through which he manages personal private equity investments in technology companies. From August 1998 to February 2001, Dr. Young served as Chief Executive Officer of Curl Corporation, an Internet infrastructure software company. From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Young was a Managing Director at Dillon, Read & Co. Inc., an investment bank. Over an 18-year period prior to that, he held a number of management and executive positions in sales, marketing, development and general management at IBM Corporation. His last position at IBM Corporation was as President of ffiM Instruments, Inc. He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
